Bu ünite, bir durumun nedenini açıklamayı ve gerekçe bildirmeyi konu alır. Bunun için bağlaçlar kullanılır.

“because” (çünkü): Bir nedeni belirtir; arkasından neden gelir. Örnek: I am tired because I studied all night. (Yorgunum çünkü bütün gece çalıştım.)

“so” (bu yüzden): Bir sonucu belirtir; arkasından sonuç gelir. Örnek: It was raining, so we stayed at home. (Yağmur yağıyordu, bu yüzden evde kaldık.)

“why” sorusu: Neden sormak için kullanılır ve cevabı genellikle “because” ile başlar. Örnek: Why are you happy? — Because I passed the exam.

Diğer bağlaçlar: and (ve), but (ama), or (veya) basit bağlantılar kurar; “because of” ise isimden önce kullanılır (because of the rain).

Önemli ayrım: “because” nedenden önce, “so” sonuçtan önce gelir. Aynı durum iki şekilde anlatılabilir: I was late because I missed the bus. = I missed the bus, so I was late.
